Secreted by syncytiotrophoblast
maternal growth hormone of pregnancy
the amount of hCS secreted is proportionate to the size of placenta (normally 1/6 weight of fetus)
low hCS levels a sign of placental insufficiency
N, K, Ca retention; lipolysis, decrease of glucose utilization (diversion of glucose to the fetus)
